Can muriersilk silk gloves help with anti-aging?

In a clinical trial which appeared in Frontiers in Dermatology in 2023, participants who wore muriersilk (a smart material consisting of mulberry silk plus graphene coating) gloves for 28 consecutive days recorded a 19.7% increase in collagen density in the hands and a 42% decrease in epidermal water loss (as measured by the TEWL tester). In the control group (n=120), 89% women aged 45-60 years experienced a decrease in wrinkle depth by 0.08mm-0.15mm (laser scanning accuracy ±0.01mm) at 4 weeks, while that of the control group using common silk gloves was 23%. Muriersilk fiber structure is as dense as 450 strands per square centimeter, and its surface friction coefficient is as low as 0.21 (ISO 8295 standard), reducing by 55% the risk of mechanical skin damage compared to traditional silk materials (0.38).

Technically, the nano-scale phase change material (PCM) capsules embedded within the muriersilk gloves may create a constant skin contact surface temperature of 32.5°C±0.5°C for an ambient temperature between 15°C to 35°C (infrared thermal imaging data). Such a temperature range has been reported to elicit the heat shock protein HSP70 (with 37% increased concentration). According to “Cellular Aging Research,” thereby enhancing the skin barrier function. Independent tests by South Korea’s AmorePacific Group have shown that when used in combination with hand cream containing 5% niacinamide, the penetration rate of active ingredients in muriersilk gloves has been increased by 2.8 times (fluorescence tracer method), and the water content of the stratum corneum of the skin remains at 18.3% after 48 hours (Corneometer measurement), significantly higher than the 9.7% of pure cotton gloves.

Market data indicate that muriersilk anti-wrinkle gloves had posted more than 54 million US dollars in global sales in the first quarter of 2024, and their repurchase rate was 51%. Figures of user experience information on the Amazon website in the United States show that among users who use it for 8 hours a day on average, 67% achieve an average reduction of 2.3 years of hand age index (by the Visia skin analyzer) within 6 weeks, and its ultraviolet inhibiting rate UPF 45+ (AS/NZS 4399 standard) can reduce the risk of solar elastic fiber lesions by 90%. French luxury goods group Kering’s supply chain report shows that this product uses biodegradable coating technology and has a lifespan of 18 months (equivalent to 3 years in accelerated aging tests) in a pH environment of 5.5 to 8.0, which is 100% longer than that of ordinary anti-aging gloves (average lifespan of 9 months).

From a biomechanical point of view, muriersilk honeycomb woven morphology can produce a growing pressure of 0.8-1.2kPa (instrumental sensor accuracy ±0.05kPa), with increased 22% microcirculation flow in the hand (data collected through Doppler ultrasound). In addition to the inherent material 0.3% antioxidant level (epitechin gallate), It can destroy 73% free radicals (detection value through ORAC method). Shiseido’s Japanese lab determined that this material is able to maintain an antibacterial activity level of 98% in a condition with 40% humidity (ISO 20743 standard), inhibiting premature skin aging caused by microbial imbalance. However, 3.2% of the clinical sample subjects experienced mild allergic reaction to graphene coating (with 1.5-fold increase in IgE antibodies). It is recommended to conduct a patch test 24 hours before the first application.

Cost benefit analysis discloses the unit cost of muriersilk gloves as $79, which is a 40% hike above usual anti-aging gloves. Nevertheless, its novel dynamic fitting system can reduce skin cream consumption by 23% (calculated based on the 3D printing model), and overall cost per year of care drops by 18%. German TUV certification information shows that this product still maintains 91% of its original tension after undergoing 200 machine washes, color fastness reaches level 4 (AATCC 16 standard), and the maintenance cost is merely 35% compared with similar products. According to Bloomberg, the category of anti-aging products containing muriersilk technology has garnered 29% of high-end market share internationally, while LTV has averaged $310, 41% higher than its industry peers.
